Football

No Premier League this weekend so straight into action in Spain where Real Madrid are out on their feet after a draw with Malaga. Ronaldo won’t mind though, because he scored. Barcelona scraped by Las Palmas in the Canaries and now have a sizeable gap between them and 2nd placed Atletico.

Elsewhere Silvio Berlusconi was busy with some casual racism, calling Mario Balotelli and Italian who ‘took too much sun’.

The Champions League this week will see Arsenal play Barcelona and Juventus play Bayern Munich. Two great games to look forward to.

Bellator 149

This freak show card was every bit as awful as Carl had imagined. Ken Shamrock lost to Royce Gracie after receiving a knee ‘downtown’, and the fight between Kimbo Slice and Dada 5000 looked like it took place in slow motion. Mike Tyson’s commentary (he must have been high as a kite?) earlier in the evening was a highlight.

The Sports Gene

We do a mini review of The Sports Gene by David Epstein. An excellent book that attempts to take on the ‘nature vs nurture’ debate when it comes to the sporting elite. There are some great stories in the book, not least about a high jumper (Donald Thomas of the Bahamas) who won the World Championships just 8 months after his first ever jump. There’s also the story of the Australian women’s Winter Olympic team who cleaned up in the skeleton event with almost no training or experience in the sport.

It’s a book that’s well worth a read!
