Do you have to report your earnings from playing poker online to the IRS on your taxes?

If so, is there a designated amount that doesn’t need to be reported - and everything above that does?

If it matters by state - I am curious about California.

Also, the way the monies are received from the poker site are via check.

A friend of mine an I are planning a poker run in which the proceeds benefit a girl with the disease Cystic Fibrosis. Just incase you don’t know what a poker run is, I’ll briefly describe it. A poker run is an organized motorcycle event where riders travel over a prescribed course and at designated stopping points, select a card. At the end of the run, the person with the best poker hand wins a prize.
Anyway, I am asking if anyone has any ideas or suggestions to make it more fun for the bikers? We will have a cash prize for the winner, but we will also have ticket drawings, so what type of items should we set out for them to win? What companies would most likely donate?
Also, how many bars to stop at, five or six? We need five cards, but maybe a six bar to stop at for the food and drinks?
Any insight is appreciated! Thanks everyone!
One more question.. How much should I charge for the t-shirts and the entry fee?

Poker seems to be alot about the luck of the draw, yet some people seem to always win, always getting the good hands. How do they do that?

I play online ( fake and real money). I just started playing real money online 2 days ago.
I am playing the penny tables and i played a sgo tourney the other day.
I placed 8th in the tourney (out of 18).

I really want to become a better player. Any tips? Any books to read? Any general recommendations for a beginning poker player?

Thanks everyone for the feedback, i am sure it will help me out.

Hi,

I’ve just created an account with poker stars and had a play money game to get used to the feel of it, but my image isn’t displayed just the gold circle, does anyone know if images are displayed at all for play money games?

Thanks.

I was playing in a tournement this week and i want to get your take on the what took place. It was the first hand and i was dealt two queens and i made a raise, and two other players called my bet. The action got to the next player who right away pointed to the floor where there was a jack and a king on the ground. Right away the dealer called over the floor and he had the dealer count down the stub, he found out that the deck was short and the floor said it was a misdeal. I tryed to explain that since there was action on the hand it coulden’t be a misdeal and that the two cards should be show and the hand be played out, but he would not change his mind. Now i deal poker for a living and i think i was right in asking the hand to be played out, but was he right in any way to call it a fouled hand.

I want to learn about the odds of catching certain hands (and also of my opponents catching certain hands) in poker, but I’m terrible at calculating odds on the spot (my math skills are pretty sub-par). Does anyone know of any sites or programs or ways to improve this aspect of my game?
